Patriots release TE Aaron Hernandez following his arrest [video]

Patriots TE Aaron Hernandez was arrested Wednesday morning and is expected to be charged with obstruction of justice for destroying possible evidence and refusing to cooperate with police investigating the June 17 murder of his associate, Odin Lloyd.

The Patriots are a notoriously conservative organization and it was announced a few hours following his arrest that the team had released him.  Here’s their statement.

A young man was murdered last week and we extend our sympathies to the family and friends who mourn his loss. Words cannot express the disappointment we feel knowing that one of our players was arrested as a result of this investigation. We realize that law enforcement investigations into this matter are ongoing. We support their efforts and respect the process. At this time, we believe this transaction is simply the right thing to do.
