Coming on the heels of San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Becky Hammon being hired to coach last season in the NBA, and leading the summer league team to a championship this summer in Las Vegas, the NFL will be adding it’s first female coach.

Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians has added Jen Welter to his coaching staff with the creation of the Bill Bidwill Coaching Fellowship.

Welter is a former rugby player at Boston College, who played 14 seasons in women’s pro football, and was the first woman to play a non-kicking position in a men’s pro league — as a running back for the Texas Revolution of Indoor Football League.

Welter will work with the team’s inside linebackers throughout training camp and the preseason. Welter will be among seven coaching interns – including former Steelers linebacker Levon Kirkland- working with the team this summer.

Baby steps still equal progress.
