Looks like the Mark Sanchez era has officially come to an end with the New York Jets. It’s been announced that rookie Geno Smith will be the starting QB for the Jets first game of the 2013 season, against the Tampa Pay Buccaneers on Sunday. This will be the first time the Jets have started a rookie at the quarterback position since 2009 when Mark Sanchez took over the role.
Smith didn’t exactly light it up in camp, but the Jets have needed a change at that position for a couple of seasons. The move also comes as a result of the shoulder injury Sanchez suffered in a pre-season game against the Giants.
Who would have thought Geno would go from being embarrassed in the green room at the draft in April to the starting role. I wonder if Geno is going to throw up The Roc?
Sanchez’s salary of $8.25 million makes him the highest paid back up QB in the NFL. Countdown until Sanchez is released.
