The NFL as a whole seems to embrace a more regimented structure for players than the NBA or MLB. So news of Dallas Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant’s “rules” isn’t as shocking to me as it probably should be.
After the incident with Dez Bryant and his mother in July, the Cowboys have a set of restrictions they’ll be instituting for the 24 year-old for the entire season.
• A midnight curfew. If he’s going to miss curfew, team officials must know in advance;
• He must attend counseling sessions twice a week.
• A rotating three-man security team will leave one man with Bryant at all times.
• Members of the security team will drive Bryant to practices, games and team functions.
Bryant’s adviser, David Wells, will hire the security team for the wide receiver.
I’m conflicted by this. On one hand, Bryant is an adult. He should be able to handle himself but, history has shown his discretion is questionable. I suppose Cowboys execs are just protecting their investment and by protecting it, it keeps Dez employed. Talent and chemistry hold wait in these sort of situations. See Chad Johnson.
Side note, the last time the team hired a security detail for a player, that player ended up in a fight with his security. Adam “Pacman” Jones…
