Phil Jackson thinking of taking a front office role with the Knicks?

Legendary NBA coach Phil Jackson has the itch to return to basketball. But this time, Phil wants to challenge himself. His interest lies not so much in returning to the bench, but in running a front office. Representatives for the Knicks reportedly flew out to Los Angeles to speak with Jackson about being the next head coach of the Knicks – sorry Mike Woodson, that’s probably a drag to hear as you continue to drag through this nightmarish season.

Jackson reportedly turned down the offer. But the New York Daily News is saying that there is still a front office role on the table that Jackson is supposed to make a decision about sometime next week.

Phil Jackson has been offered a front office position with the Knicks and is expected to give the club a decision sometime next week, the Daily News has learned.

It is unclear what position the Knicks offered, but the NBA source said that it would be “more than just a consulting job.”

Mike Woodson was asked about the rumor on Friday.

“I really don’t have an opinion on it,” he said, a somewhat bemused look on his face. I really don’t. I mean, again, as I sit here today, I’m the coach of the New York Knicks. And I’m not going to entertain anything about Phil. I have a great deal of respect for Phil but I’m not going to entertain anything about Phil Jackson. My job is to try to get this team to play at a high level and we have a big game tonight against Utah and we have to get ready to play.”

Of course, the best case scenario is that Jim Buss let’s go of that ego and allows Jeanie Buss to take over the Lakers and Phil steps into the basketball operations role there.
One can dream…
