Mark Cuban buy Nets.com puts up a message dissing Brooklyn Nets & owner Mikhail Prokhorov?

We all know that Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is a savvy businessman. After all, he is a “shark” – ok, that was a cheesy reference to his ABC TV show, Shark Tank, which I LOVE by the way – but anyway. It should come as no surprise that when Cuban sees an opportunity, he jumps on it.

The digital arena is big business these days and social media is a key component. Protecting your brand extends to it’s domain name as well,  so it’s ironic that with all the hype over the rebranded Brooklyn Nets, someone forgot to secure the Nets.com domain. Cuban is a little miffed with the Nets – they swooped in and signed Deron Williams – and its owner, Russian billionaire, Mikhail Prokhorov. So, did Mark Cuban devise his own scoop, by purchasing Nets.com?? That’s what’s being implied:

“Looking for the New Jersey Nets? Looking for the Brooklyn Nets? They’re not here…but they SHOULD be!

After all, there’s just one team: The Nets!”

On the bottom of the page, there is a message in Russian, which was probably meant for Prokhorov, and it reads, more or less:

“Michael, have you noticed? Vilena wondered…”

That last little barb “Michael” is referencing Mikhail while the Vilena part is a reference to a Russian prostitute. Now, what you may not know is that back in January 2007, Prokhorov was arrested on suspicion of arranging prostitutes for his guests. Even though the billionaire was cleared of the charge and the case was dismissed two years later.

**UPDATE**

Thanks to the handy work of my friends at Larry brown Sports, We now know that the ACTUAL owner of the domain is Cyber Mesa Computer Systems and THIS is probably just their idea of a good time. It is however, still funny and a great example of why you have to protect your brand.
