During a pre-draft meeting with Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson made it a point to ask Cam if he had any tattoos or piercings. He recently revealed the conversation during an interview:
Richardson, who said that Newton “was dressed perfectly” for their meeting, was blunt. “I said, ‘Do you have any tattoos?’” Richardson told Rose. “He said, ‘No, sir. I don’t have any.’ I said, ‘Do you have any piercings?’ He said, ‘No, sir. I don’t have any.’ I said, ‘We want to keep it that way.’ . . . .
“We want to keep no tattoos, no piercings, and I think you’ve got a very nice haircut.”
Interjected the host: “You sound like a Lombardi.”
Said Richardson, “No, I just sound reasonable to me.”
Interesting. I know some may take the POV that as a team owner about to pay this guy millions of dollars, he has every right to not only ask those questions but to express his desire for him not to get them. And I understand that line of thinking however, I wonder how many other players on the team have tattoos and/or piercings? How many in his coaching or front office staff? Yes it’s his right to ask, but if he’s not being consistent across the board than I’d say that’s a slight cause for concern, no?
