Bill Maher buys a piece of the New York Mets

Political commentator Bill Maher has purchased a stake in the New York Mets. Last winter there was an offering of twelve minority stakes, Maher took the plunge then. The  percentage of the team or how much $$ he put out is unknown.

“First of all, I think it’s a great investment,” Maher said. “People sometimes forget that there’s only one National League franchise in New York City and they’re not making anymore. I’m a Met fan my whole life and I think it would be a great place.”

Who knew Bill Maher had coins like that! He’s right though, owners complain that they’re losing money but there is never a shortage of willing investors for a professional team franchise.  Maher joins other celebrity owners such as Serena Williams, Jennifer Lopez and Fergie with the Miami Dolphins and Jay-Z with the Brooklyn Nets. I wonder if Nelly is start part of the Bobcats and Usher with the Cavaliers? It’s probably not much fun to claim the Bobcats right now.

Maher has no plans to get involved in team operations but he does feel like he’s the team’s good luck charm.

“I’m just a fan,” Maher insisted. “I’m not going to get involved. I think my role is going to be bringing luck to the team — they didn’t have a no-hitter for 50 years, I buy in and I come to town and there’s a no-hitter. Draw your own conclusions.”

His official title is “Team partner.”
