Sending condolences to former Chicago Bears running back Adrian Peterson. His six-year-old son A.J. passed away Tuesday.
A.J. suffered from an inoperable form of brain stem cancer known as Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG).
DIPG primarily affects children between the ages of 5 and 7.
A.J. received his diagnosis last June. He was the eldest of their four children.
Selected by Chicago in the sixth round of the 2002 NFL draft, Peterson spent eight seasons (2002-09) with the Bears. Since his retiring from football, Peterson has created a nonprofit, The Adrian Peterson Foundation, that helps children in need.
Following AJ’s diagnosis, that same kindness was returned to the Peterson family via a GoFundMe campaign, which helped to raise close to $40,000 to help cover the costs of medical treatments.
