If by chance you missed the National College Basketball championship game Monday night, or even turned away with five minutes left, you missed one of the best games of the year.
March Madness lived up to the hype with the Villanova Wildcats beating the UNC Tarheels with a last second buzzer beater. With 0.4 seconds left, Villanova forward Kris Jenkins hit a three-pointer to snatch the win 77-74 and lead the wildcats to their second national championship title in history.
The shot by Jenkins was the culmination of a game that kept you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. The lead switched back and forth between the two teams in the first half but Carolina closed it out with a 39-34 lead.
Villanova took back the lead in the second half, with the Tar Heels down by 10 at one point. The last five minutes is where things got crazy. UNC cut the lead down with a jumper and a layup from forward Brice Johnson, a 3-pointer and pair of free throws from guard Joel Berry II, and a layup and 3-point jumper from guard Marcus Paige. Then, with 4.6 seconds left in the game, Paige came up big again and hit a double-pump three pointer to tie the game 74-74. Most thought we were headed to overtime.
But with the clock winding down, Villanova point guard Ryan Arcidiacono passed to Jenkins, who hit the game-winning shot and stunned the Tar Heels. Villanova’s win marks the first time they’ve won the NCAA Tournament Championship since 1985.
