Serena Williams Hits The Splits In 3rd Round US Open Victory

Serena-Williams

The U.S. Open kicked off this week in New York. Of course two of the biggest storylines involve Serena Williams and Rafael Nadal. This year two of the most dominant champions of tennis are on opposite career trajectories.

Serena Williams is the owner of 21 major victories, she completed the “Serena Slam” in July after winning Wimbledon and is now in the hunt for a calendar slam by claiming victories in all four major tournaments in 2015.

On Friday, Serena showed she is well on her way in a comeback victory, beating Bethanie Mattek-Sands to set up a fourth-round match against Madison Keys.

Meanwhile, Nadal will go a calendar year without winning any major tournament for the first time since 2004. Rafael lost Friday to Fabio Fognini in third round.

There’s another Williams making a buzz at the U.S.Open, Venus looks like she’s back on the upswing, at 35 she knocked off 12th-seeded-18-year-old Belinda Bencic, of Switzerland.

Venus has been dealing with the symptoms of the chronic autoimmune disease Sjogren’s syndrome over the past few years. Her win against Bencic marked the third time since 2011 — and the third time this year — that she has advanced past the third round of a Grand Slam tournament.

Side note, congratulations to Venus for earning her Bachelor of Science in business administration from Indiana University East this summer.

Can’t forget the stars in the building watching the matches so far. Some of the names include:

Vogue Editor Anna Wintour, Academy Award winning actor Jamie Foxx, Kelly Rowland, retired Yankees legend Derek Jeter, DJ Brittany Sky and Fabolous, and two of those guys from One Direction, Niall Horan and Liam Payne.
