Magic Johnson’s playing days in Los Angeles ended way too soon. But his impact throughout the city of Los Angeles has almost been greater through his off the court business dealings.
Magic and his business partner, Dodgers chairman Mark Walter are coming together to save the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks.
The Sparks were one of the first eight WNBA franchises. The team was owned by the Buss family until 2007 when they were sold to Paula Madison – original Sparks player and WNBA legend, Lisa Leslie also had a minority interest in the team. But last December, Madison told the league she could no longer operate the team and was claiming losses of over $12 million.
The league took over ownership and it looked as if the Warriors were interested in buying the team, moving it to the Bay area and dropping the name.
A formal announcement is expected Wednesday morning.
