Serena Williams defeated her older sister Venus Monday to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2015 Wimbledon tournament. This marked their 26th career meeting. Serena won the match in a 6-4 and 6-3 victory. Combined the two have won 27 Grand Slam singles titles.
Serena wasn’t her usual vibrant self after the win. She spoke about the awkwardness in playing her best friend:
“It’s hard to feel excited about (beating) someone you root for all the time no matter what and who you love so much and she’s your best friend in the world,” Serena said. “It’s never easy but you just play for the competition and enjoy the moment.”
Serena also posted this message to Instagram following her victory.
There’s nothing I would not do for this brave inspirational woman @venuswilliams how fortunate I am to have u as my sister. 💋❤️ #sisters
This win extends Serena’s Grand Slam winning streak to 25 matches. If Serena holds on to win Wimblesdon, she will hold all four major titles at once. The last time she did that was in 2003.
And in case you forgot that Serena is the one, a quick throwback to the weekend when the crowd was booing Serena and she told them “don’t try me.”
