Michael Vick released a statement today that he was postponing his appearance on Oprah.
“After careful consideration, I will need to postpone the taping of the Oprah Winfrey interview scheduled for February 22. I admire and respect Oprah and hope to be able to participate in an interview in the future.”
I know it seems crazy that I would be an advocate of Vick NOT appearing on Oprah but I have my reasons.
- I don’t feel like there is anything further to discuss on the topic of his “redemption”. He’s served his time, performed well on the field (that franchise tag is great and should help to clear his debt right) Basically he did what he was supposed to do. Nothing new there.
- He’s already done several interviews AND a reality show about his road to back from his time in jail.
- A friend shared with me that part of the concern was that Oprah and her production company Harpo didn’t want to share the topics and questions that she planned to discuss. Might have been an ambush he wasn’t prepared for. Ms. O is an animal lover (as am I) and it may have been unfair and downright detrimental if the situation didn’t play out correctly.
I think Michael and his advisors, PR team whoever is guiding him have done a GREAT job overall. He’s handled every contorversary from playing time to potential party backlash with grace and dignity. He’s let his play speak first and foremost and THAT is why the doors are swinging back open for him.
Guess he’ll have to check Oprah next lifetime.
