JR Smith’s father wants him to resign with the Knicks for financial security

JR Smith has made over $25 million in his NBA career. But as we’ve seen with many examples, racks on racks plus athletes doesn’t necessarily equate to lifelong riches. ESPN New York is reporting that Smith’s father, Earl sr. Is encouraging his son to stay with the Knicks for financial security.

A source told ESPN New York that Smith’s father, Earl, is going to make a strong case for his son to stay in New York, but “it’s very clear that the money is the biggest factor with him.”

In fact, when Smith chose the Knicks over the Clippers in mid-February after coming back from China, a source said the Knicks’ higher offer ($2.443 million to the Clippers’ $1.4 million veteran’s minimum) was the deciding factor because he was financially broke. Therefore, Smith will likely opt out and ask for the 20 percent raise. At that point, the ball will be in the Knicks’ court to re-sign Smith, who’s already said publicly that he wants to return next season.

JR has two daughters, not sure if child support is an issue. He’s also from Jersey so it could be as simple as his family wanting him to be close to home. However, if money was the motivator, can’t be mad at wanting to get it NOW as opposed to what might be possible in the future.

If JR uses his player option to opt out of his $2.4 million for next season, the Knicks can resign him for $3 million… in my mind, he’s worth at least that in the open market. Summer and free agency post lockout will be interesting.

JR’s shoe closet certainly looks wealthy.
