Cookie Johnson says she always knew son EJ was gay

Cookie Johnson recently spoke with Huffington Post about her son EJ coming out. She revealed that as a mother, she knew very early on about her son’s sexual orientation and that he made no attempts to hide it. She also gives advice to any parents who might be working through this with their children.

“We had already dealt with it years ago, so for us it wasn’t a big deal,” Cookie said, adding that EJ had “never tried to hide” his sexuality, even when he was much younger, and therefore his revelation didn’t come as a big surprise: “A mother kinda knows these things.”

The wife of the basketball legend went on to offer a few tips for parents who have lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) children of their own.

“To me, the most important thing is to let them know that you love them,” she said. “These kids need that kind of support, they don’t want to be ostracized especially at home with their own families…and why should they be? So it was important for us to make sure that he knew…that we loved him and we supported him 100 percent.”

EJ is currently shooting a reality show for E!
