Here we are again discussing the subject of Houston Rockets rookie Royce White. White appeared on CNN with Don Lemon last week to discuss mental health and the NBA. When asked by Mr. Lemon what he needed to be successful with the Rockets, White’s repeated response was “respect and recognition.” Pretty vague response for someone who seems to enjoy dialog so much. Saturday night while on Twitter, I assume White was searching his name and happened to come across a Tweet that contained a link to my post about that appearance. That started a “Twitter-view” between White and myself – with added commentary from others – where I attempted to go deeper into the situation to ascertain what it is that White feels is missing from his current course of treatment.
What I actually got was more double talk and insults about my lack of intelligence and comprehension skills. My quick assessment, White is upset about being sent to the D League. It’s definitly not the NBA. And when faced with a point blank question or to clarify remarks HE made, he results to being condescending and deflecting saying it’s YOU who just can’t get it.

So what do you need to be successful? RT @highway_30“@stilettojill:” Opinion doesn’t change truth, so what you say is irrelevant. — Jill Munroe (@StilettoJill) March 24, 2013
“@stilettojill: @highway_30 ???” Of go back and actually listen to what I said, or maybe your not interested in truth… only consensus. — Royce White (@Highway_30) March 24, 2013
I listened. You said respect and acknowledgement. How haven’t they acknowledged you @highway_30? Do you not thinking care for — Jill Munroe (@StilettoJill) March 24, 2013
your illness first and then returning to basketball might be a better option @highway_30 ? You look like a brat — Jill Munroe (@StilettoJill) March 24, 2013
My opinion is that you’ve handled this wrong. You list living in a hotel as an issue for the D League. How will you travel? @highway_30 — Jill Munroe (@StilettoJill) March 24, 2013
@stilettojill You don’t have enough information to have a valid opinion, actually very few ppl do. — Royce White (@Highway_30) March 24, 2013
@stilettojill Standard NBA road trips last at most 1 week before returning home, I’ve been in the RGV for 5. — Royce White (@Highway_30) March 24, 2013
But that is NBA life. That’s not altered for anyone so logically the adjustment has to come from you. Can’t change the schedule @highway_30 — Jill Munroe (@StilettoJill) March 24, 2013
@stilettojill You’re not informed or qualified to determine what’s a valid variable in a persons overall #mentalhealth, so why comment? — Royce White (@Highway_30) March 24, 2013
@stilettojill Lol, “Recognize & Respect #MentalHealth under health umbrella, allow docs to take lead in health issues.” Said it twice now! — Royce White (@Highway_30) March 24, 2013
Did they not put together a plan for you? Is that not allowing the health side to take the lead? Special accomdations etc @highway_30 — Jill Munroe (@StilettoJill) March 24, 2013
@stilettojill Doctors take the lead, you don’t have to get rig of your disability before being employed… — Royce White (@Highway_30) March 24, 2013
But I’m asking YOU RT @highway_30 @stilettojill You don’t have enough information to have a valid opinion, actually very few ppl do. — Jill Munroe (@StilettoJill) March 24, 2013
How am I “not informed” because I disagree with your opinion? @highway_30 the nature of the job involves things you can’t currently perform — Jill Munroe (@StilettoJill) March 24, 2013
Not get rid of it but be able to perform. Road trips are 41 of your 82 games. That can’t change because of you @highway_30 only play at home — Jill Munroe (@StilettoJill) March 24, 2013
@stilettojill Obviously you should brush up on your ADA law, you make yourself and others look silly with such frivolous comments. — Royce White (@Highway_30) March 24, 2013
Nobody seems to be qualified in your eyes. Again, is the NBA for you? I was rooting for you, you’re being unreasonable @highway_30 — Jill Munroe (@StilettoJill) March 24, 2013
The basic conditions for the job can’t change. No discrimination, not misinformed. Common sense.@highway_30 — Jill Munroe (@StilettoJill) March 24, 2013
@stilettojill You’re not interested in truth, when the info does become available you’ll find a way 2 still convince yourself I’m wrong. Lol
— Royce White (@Highway_30) March 24, 2013
No, I am asking you for clarity. If the Doctor takes the lead than he’s shared the info with you. Explain it. You’re articulate @highway_30
— Jill Munroe (@StilettoJill) March 24, 2013
RT @highway_30 @stilettojill I haven’t complained about 41 road trip games, or those hotels… I said the RGV and the dynamic that presents — Jill Munroe (@StilettoJill) March 24, 2013
You said on CNN with that your hotel situation made D league life uncomfortable. So what happens in the NBA. That won’t change @highway_30 — Jill Munroe (@StilettoJill) March 24, 2013
Basic conditions but the professional arena requires more. You want “basic” hit a rec league. This is what is required @highway_30
— Jill Munroe (@StilettoJill) March 24, 2013
@stilettojill As this has very little to do with travel at all, I’ll address it anyway. I’ve proven that ✈ isn’t the only way to travel. Lol
— Royce White (@Highway_30) March 24, 2013
Ok but why play secret squirrel with the info. People want to get behind you and you give no info and cliched answers @highway_30 — Jill Munroe (@StilettoJill) March 24, 2013
@stilettojill If you can’t comprehend the answers, you can’t… that doesn’t make them vague or clichéd, you just don’t know enough. — Royce White (@Highway_30) March 24, 2013
@stilettojill LIVING in a hotel for 5 weeks straight is a way different dynamic then what we standard my so in road trips, obviously.
— Royce White (@Highway_30) March 24, 2013
Now here’s the part where he attempted to dismiss me, but continued the discussion anyway.
@stilettojill If I didn’t have a valid argument, I’d be probably be gone by now. #BeWell friend…
— Royce White (@Highway_30) March 24, 2013
My comprehension skills are firmly in tact, if it was JUST ME, that would be different.Blaming everyone else won’t help you win @highway_30 — Jill Munroe (@StilettoJill) March 24, 2013
@stilettojill Consensus isn’t synonymous with truth. “Disability Alternatives” are mandated to be made availible by federal law. #Homework — Royce White (@Highway_30) March 24, 2013
have the Rockets been working with your Doctor to make arrangements. Isn’t that “acknowledgement” why this convo is happening @highway_30
— Jill Munroe (@StilettoJill) March 24, 2013
If that many people are unclear of your position or platform. You need to revamp and restate it. You never make a concise point @highway_30
— Jill Munroe (@StilettoJill) March 24, 2013
@stilettojill Mental Health must be recognized under the umbrella of “Health Matter”, and respected like other injuries… maybe even more. — Royce White (@Highway_30) March 24, 2013
Again. What do you and ur Dr. require for your treatment that you aren’t getting? That would clear up a lot. EXAMPLE could help @highway_30
— Jill Munroe (@StilettoJill) March 24, 2013
@stilettojill If that’s too vague, we’re probably just in two different places in life…
— Royce White (@Highway_30) March 24, 2013
Stop being condescending to deflect. I’m asking for your input. You keep saying I don’t know. Enlighten me. Examples are good @highway_30
— Jill Munroe (@StilettoJill) March 24, 2013
I politely asked Royce what the Rockets have failed to do. Where are they ignoring his Dr’s request… no answer
— Jill Munroe (@StilettoJill) March 24, 2013
@stilettojill All those words have plain english definitions you can surely look up, when using them… I’m referring 2 #MentalHealth topic.
— Royce White (@Highway_30) March 24, 2013
@stilettojill Lol, ppl who need to get what I’m saying, do. Those that don’t, don’t and never did matter. Recognition, Respect & Action…
— Royce White (@Highway_30) March 24, 2013
Again with the cute banter. How do those words apply to your situation. That Sir is CONTEXT. You lack that @highway_30
— Jill Munroe (@StilettoJill) March 24, 2013
Good nice Royce #BeWell RT @highway_30@stilettojill #BeWell friend, wishing you only positives in #2K13…
— Jill Munroe (@StilettoJill) March 24, 2013
If it’s consistency Royce needs to succeed, 5 weeks living in a hotel room playing for the D League is too long? Is there a cut off time frame? If you’re actively playing, you could be home one week and gone another. What happens if the scheduling Gods give you a two week road trip? Different time zones, practice at varied facilities. Is that scenario better than playing in the D League.
I’m not trying to belittle Royce’s condition but, I am questioning his ability to perform his job with such limitations. Failing to list out and say, “If I had “X” conditions per my doctor, it would assist in “Y” area” for example. While the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) was put in place to protect people from discrimination, it doesn’t say that you should be given the job if you can’t perform the duties. Should a blind man be able to drive a cab?
My thought is that it shouldn’t preclude someone from giving you the job if you’re able. Once you are IN that job, you are subject to the same sort of evaluation as others in the same role. And if you are unable or unwilling to perform or provide the TEAM with what it needs to succeed as a whole, you have to go. Ask the players who are picked up on 10-day contracts or, who have bounced back and forth between the D League and an NBA call up. Is he supposed to be exempt from that? Rookies can be sent down, it’s in the CBA. If his treatment deems that fact to be unreasonable, what should the Rockets do? Let him play with Harden and Lin with no practice time? Ignore the CBA rules for him but apply it to other players? This is why specifics would help. Simply saying that, “those who need to know do” is a cop out. If that’s the case, keep the discussion of it out of the media.
Good luck with that Royce… opps wait, I mean #BeWell. ::giggle::
