“Straight Outta Compton” Opens Big With $60.2 Million

This weekend the NWA biopic “Straight Outta Compton” roared into theatres smashing the competition, to secure the top spot at the box office.

The Universal pictures released film took in $60.2 million this weekend playing on 2,757 screens, becoming the biggest-ever August debut for an R-rated movie. The film was shot on a budget of $29 million, by Friday it had the majority of that back.

The other film that opened this weekend was a 1960’s TV show reboot, “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” earned $13.5 million from 3,638 theaters. It cost $75 million to produce.

If you haven’t seen this film yet, it’s worth your coins on so many levels. Great story, excellent direction, and the cast of newcomers did their thing. As someone who grew up in LA during this era, the care and details in the story were compelling. Obviously the social themes attached to NWA’s hit song, “F the police” still resonate in 2015.

I only have two complaints. The actor that played Pac looked just like him, but I wasn’t really feeling his performance. The actor that played Snoop, sounded and acted like Snoop, looked like Kurupt though. He had an answer for that.

Congrats to the cast and crew. Dubs up for life.
