The phrase, “stick to sports” isn’t valid in 2017. Over the last few years, we’ve watched as professional athletes have become more outspoken on their political views. During the 2016 NFL season, we watched Niners QB Colin Kaepernick put his money where his mouth was as it related to his stand on police brutality.
With the new presidential administration, now more than ever, the pros are extremely vocal about what they will throw their support behind if it’s not in line with their thoughts on the greater good. Earlier this week in an interview with CNBC, Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank had several kind words for President Donald Trump, referring to him as an “a real asset for the country.”
One of Under Armour’s most popular athletes, Warriors guard Stephen Curry, was asked what he thought about Plank’s praise of Trump.
“I agree with that description,” Curry said, “if you remove the ‘et’”
Curry went on to say that Under Armour is still home after speaking to the company at length, but made it clear, he has other options should the company go on a trajectory he feels isn’t aligned with his personal beliefs.
“I spent all day yesterday on the phone,” Curry said, “with countless people at Under Armour, countless people in Kevin Plank’s camp, my team, trying to understand what was going on and where everybody stood on the issue. Based off the release that KP sent out this morning, and what he told me last night, that’s the Under Armour that I know. That’s the brand I know he’s built and one that, as of Wednesday afternoon, is something that I’m standing on.”
This is the part where he makes it clear, he’s willing to move around if need be:
Meanwhile, Atlanta Hawks guard Kent Bazemore – reportedly the guy who convinced Steph to take a shot with UA – is onboard with Plank’s vision.
Misty Copeland is also signed to UA, she posted the following message to her Instagram account:
