The New Orleans Pelicans? Is this high school or an NBA pro franchise? The New Orleans Hornets are changing their name. With a new owner, a new identity is being forged. But, out of all the selections that were available, selecting the state’s bird was the choice? I mean, that’s nice and all but, is that an image that brings to mind a winning franchise or even the city of New Orleans?
Considering the Saints owner, Tom Benson purchased the team. I would’ve expected one of the other suggestions like Krewe (an organization that puts on a parade or Ball during Mardi Gras carnival in New Orleans) or Brass to continue with a theme of New Orleans teams under his ownership.
Voodoo would’ve worked or the very un-PC Hurricanes. USA Today reports that the Hornets are saying any name change has to be approved by the NBA and they haven’t vetted that process yet. If the name change is true, expect the change to take place during the 2013-2014 season.
What do you think of the new name? Any alternate suggestions?
