Kareem Abdul-Jabbar interested in UCLA head coach job [video]

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is not only one of the greatest to play the game of basketball at the NBA level. He also had  and outstanding college career with the UCLA Bruins. As a 7-foot-2 center for the John Wooden led Bruins, between 1967 to 1969, Abdul-Jabbar was the star on a team that was 88-2 and won three NCAA titles. Kareem has expressed an interest in the UCLA head coaching job after the recent firing of Ben Howland.

Abdul-Jabbar was on Jimmy Kimmel Live! this week and said he’d love to return the traditions of actually learning the game of basketball and becoming scholars to the UCLA program. Check the clip and read on for some of his other comments

“Like all Bruin supporters,” Abdul-Jabbar said, “the recent trend at our school hasn’t made me happy. The players don’t seem to be learning how to play, and haven’t been graduating.

“We can do better.”

We always discuss Michael, Magic, Larry Bird etc. But it’s important to remember that Kareem won six NBA titles with the Lakers, six MVP’s and is the leagues all time leading scorer. In the past he was considered difficult to work with and/ surely. He also worked as a special assistant for the Clippers and the Lakers. Developing talent like Andrew Bynum and former lottery pick, Michael Olowokandi – random pop culture moment, the mother of two of Michael’s children is Suzie from “Basketball Wives Miami.”

Abdul-Jabbar, who will turn 66 on April 16, said that he has “reached out” to UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero, “and hopefully, I can get a chance to make my case.”
