Danny Ferry announced as Atlanta Hawks new GM

The Atlanta Hawks have a new GM. Danny Ferry takes over the reigns as of July 1st leaving his former post as assistant GM for the Spurs. Taking over for Rick Sund, Ferry will serve in a dual capacity as GM and President of basketball operations.

Hawks co-owner Bruce Levenson said Monday that Ferry has the right character and experience to take over a team which lost to Boston in the first round of this year’s playoffs after making it to the second round three straight years.

Ferry’s previous executive experience came as the GM of the Cleveland Cavliers during the LeBron years (from ’05-’10 including an ’07 finals appearance.) Ferry also played with both the Spurs and Cavs franchises during his playing days.

He’ll have a lot of work to do with the Hawks. The team only has 6 players under contract for the upcoming season, Josh Smith’s pending free agency, the mammoth contract of Joe Johnson  and the 23rd pick in Thursday’s draft.
