NBA Free agency began at midnight on July 1st. As we begin this roller coaster ride, at least one team in the west wasted no time offering an extension to their young superstar. The Clippers offered up contract extensions to both Blake Griffin and Chris Paul. Only one of those guys was ready to sign on the dotted line though.
Blake Griffin has reportedly agreed to a 5-year-$95 million extension with the franchise. Griffin has one more year left on his current deal. Chris Paul was offered 3-years-$60 million but wants to take a wait and see approach. Paul will earn $17 million next season. The Clips- who are also operating without a GM at the moment- have also reached out to Chauncey Billups agent and will contact Nick Young’s as well.
There was only one other time I recall the Clippers being this aggressive and that was during the free agency period of Lamar Odom, Elton Brand, Quentin Richardson and Darius Miles. The end result wasn’t quite as sunny but then again, that team wasn’t as good as the newly reloaded Clippers.
Now if someone can help Vinny Del Negro on the coaching side, maybe the Clippers can make it to the Western Conference finals next season.
Free agents can officially sign deals on July 11th.
