The NFL will make history tonight (Thursday, August 9) when Shannon Easton becomes the first female ref to officiate an NFL game. Easton, a 42-year old line judge, will be officiating a pre-season game between the Green Bay Packers against the San Diego Chargers.
The move comes 14 years after the NBA introduced two females to it’s officiating staff. One of which, Violet Palmer, is still a ref today and has also been on the crew for several playoff games. The move is happening in the NFL due to labor strife. An agreement hasn’t been reached between the league and it’s officials.
Eastin is a 17-year veteran official for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
