Warriors guard Klay Thompson gets $300 weekly allowance from Parents

You’re a 23-year-old millionaire. An NBA star. But your parents have you on a $300 week allowance… Does that seem right? Well if you’re Warriors guard Klay Thompson, not only is it factual, you can expect a deduction if you’re involved in any on-court altercations too. Klay’s father Mychael is an ex-NBA player – he spent time with the Spurs, Blazers and the Lakers – and he controls his son’s wallet.

Klay was fined $35K by the NBA for his involvement in a scuffle that started between Pacers Roy Hibbert and Klay’s teammate David Lee. Because of that, the elder Thompson has put the young guard on punishment:

“I saw Klay mixed up in the beginning, tied up with George Hill,” Mychal said. “I say to myself, don’t do nothing stupid now, don’t throw a punch, don’t throw the ball at anybody.”

“Then Roy Hibbert turned his back & [Klay] was like ‘now’s my chance’!”

“I was like ‘you idiot’!”

The 23-year-old doesn’t have access to his money, all cheques are paid to Mychal & Julie who take care of his accounts for him to make sure Klay’s financial situation is set up for his post NBA career.

So, naturally, Papa Thompson’s going to teach Klay a lesson of his own by fining him personally also, however, Klay will find out the old fashioned way.

“He will [find out he’s been fined by us] when he sees that cash envelope show up a little short this week,” he said.

So how is Klay issued out his money? Check out the breakdown:

“Rent is $3K… Walking around money $300 a week…” Mychal explained.

“That’s a lot of money to go to the movies & buy pizza…”

But what if Klay wanted to take a girl out on a nice date?

“Go to Langers in Oakland… Go to the grocery store & get a nice [bottle of wine] for $30…”

What about the corkage fee?

“Sit in the car & drink it.”

Listen, I am all for fiscal responsibility. And I think it’s great that his parents are helping to set him up for a post-NBA life. But pizza and a bottle of wine in the car? He can’t be serious. Think this one through ladies. That’s going to be a tricky situation. He gets more in per diem on the road than he does in weekly allowance. No shoe-bag combo for you. ::giggle::
