Former NBA player and current ESPN college basketball analyst Jay Williams has been in the news lately discussing the infamous motorcycle accident that ended his professional basketball career almost a decade ago. In that interview Jay mentioned the toll playing for the Bulls took on him that time. The immediate post-Jordan years featured a lot of losing. Jay also shared that his teammates at the time were getting high before games and other foolishness from the bench.
“I didn’t know how to handle it at first. I didn’t know how to be around it. Guys were on the bench, trying to kick it to girls in the stands, having ball boys run over. I mean, some guys were high.”
Asked to clarify, Williams said: “There were guys smoking weed before games. Guys asking in the middle of the game, ‘Do you smell popcorn?'”
Tyson Chandler was one of Jay Williams teammate at that time and he says Jay’s account of that time isn’t true.
Tyson can probably speak for himself but I have no doubt that Jay was telling the truth. It happens and some of that is actually standard bench operating action.
In case you were wondering who was on the roster of the 2002-2003 Bulls. Check that below and make your guess who Jay might have been referring to. I have my own theories… Considering Corie Blount’s post NBA issues, that’s a great place to start.
