A jury has convicted former NBA player Nick Van Exel’s 22-year old son, Nickey Maxwell Van Exel of murder. Nickey was on trial for the 2010 murder of his friend, Bradley Bassey Eyo.
Prosecutors pursued a capital murder conviction. They said retaliation was the motive because Eyo planned to tell authorities about several armed robberies the two men allegedly committed together in 2010.Van Exel claimed the shooting was an accident stemming from the two playing with a loaded shot gun at Van Exel’s home. Van Exel says they didn’t realize the gun was loaded. He dumped the body in Lake Ray Hubbard on the eastern outskirts of Dallas.
The younger Van Exel was sentenced to 60 years on Friday. Nick wept on the witness stand and apologized to the family of Bradley Bassey Eyo.
