Serena Williams has said she already spoke with Maria Sharapova and apologized for her comments in a recent “Rolling Stone” interview that many correctly guessed were aimed at Maria. Sharapova fired back at Serena in her pre Wimbledon press conference and Serena addressed the situation Sunday.
“She was inadvertently brought into the situation by assumptions made by the reporter,” Williams said Sunday in London during her pre-Wimbledon news conference. “I personally talked to Maria at the player party, incidentally. I said, ‘Look, I want to personally apologize to you if you are offended by being brought into my situation. I want to take this moment to just pour myself, be open, say I’m very sorry for this whole situation.’ “
Apologies are good but I doubt if either side sincerely means it. The two are on opposite sides of the seeding for Wimbledon so if they happened to meet up again – Serena just defeated Sharapova in The French Open – it wouldn’t be until the finals.
