Redskins RB Clinton Portis Says 1 Out Of 53 “Packages” Will Be Appealing To Female Reporters

Looks like the Jets aren’t the only NFL team feeling the fallout from Ines-gate. Yesterday the NFL announced it would investigate allegations of inappropriate behavior while Ms. Sainz was in the locker room (Although Ines has since stated that she didn’t feel the player’s behavior deserved punishment. It was apparently another female reporter that filed the complaint) Redskins RB Clinton Portis made statements on a Washington DC area station that have the NFL (and quite a few ladies) upset with him. His comments:

“I think you put women reporters in the locker room in position to see guys walking around naked, and you sit in the locker room with 53 guys, and all of the sudden you see a nice woman in the locker room, I think men are going to tend to turn and look and want to say something to that woman,” You put a woman and you give her a choice of 53 athletes, somebody got to be appealing to her,” Portis said. “You know, somebody got to spark her interest, or she’s going to want somebody. I don’t know what kind of woman won’t, if you get to go and look at 53 men’s [bodies]. … I know you’re doing a job, but at the same time, the same way I’m going to cut my eye if I see somebody worth talking to, I’m sure they do the same thing.”

As a female who is working her way UP the sports ladder, I have to be honest, he has a valid point. I’ve been in work situations where female models or even fresh faced college interns have caused the men in my office to have water cooler whispered conversations or lingering glances. I’ve also watch female coworkers swoon over Actors or the Fed Ex guy. The biggest issue is maintaining a level of professionalism in these situations.  Ensuring that your actions or words don’t make that person or others around uncomfortable.

The NFL had this to say to USA Today, “The comments are clearly inappropriate, offensive and and have no place in the NFL,” NFL spokesman Greg Aiello

I appreciate the NFL’s swift response to the allegations however, I think that this particular instance has been a bit overblown. I also believe that if people were to climb outside of their feelings and look at what Clinton said, they’ll find that what he said wasn’t terrible, just poorly worded. At least that’s THIS female’s opinion.

But Clinton doesn’t have to worry about being my pick, he’s a bit to ummmm, let’s see what’s a great word to use, “eclectic” for my taste.
