NBA Player’s Union Investigating NYPD Arrest Of Hawks’ Thabo Sefolosha and Pero Antic

The National Basketball Association’s Players Union is investigating the arrest of two Atlanta Hawks players this week in New York.

Hawks lost guard Thabo Sefolosha and his teammate Pero Antic were arrested outside of 1Oak nightclub in New York last Wednesday morning. Sefolosha suffered a fractured tibia in his right leg during the arrest. The two were reportedly detained and arrested for allegedly obstructing a crime scene – the stabbing of Pacers forward Chris Copeland. But reportedly, the two didn’t even see that altercation take place, and plan on protesting the arrest. Video surfaced of Sefolosha being wrestled by a group of cops, and violently slammed.

The players’ union announced Friday that they’re conducting their own investigation into the New York Police Department’s tactics. From ESPN.com’s Kevin Arnovitz:

“The players’ union is concerned about the circumstances of Thabo Sefolosha and Pero Antic’s arrest and is doing its own investigation of the situation,” NBPA spokeswoman Tara Greco said. “The union was fully engaged in supporting all three players in court and in the precinct this week, and will continue to stay engaged as each situation evolves.”

Both Antic and Sefolosha have said they were in the wrong place, at the wrong time. The Hawks organization has so far supported both players.
