Monty Williams Delivers Moving Tribute To Wife Ingrid

A forgiving heart is something that we should all strive for, but there are many circumstances where it can be hard to imagine immediate forgiveness. Oklahoma City Thunder Assistant coach Monty Williams showed incredible courage on Thursday as he delivered the eulogy of his wife Ingrid Williams.

Ingrid passed away following a tragic car accident last week. The 44-year-old mother of five died after her car was struck head-on by an SUV that crossed the center line after losing control. The other driver, Susannah Donaldson, also died.

In front of many NBA stars and peers from around the league who were among the 900 attending the celebration of Ingrid’s life, Monty spoke of forgiveness and how simply complaining won’t change things.

“I’m thankful for all the people who showed up today,” Williams said. “It’s a pretty tough time, not just for me but for all of you as well. I’m mindful of that.

“This is hard for my family, but this will work out. And my wife would punch me if I were to sit up here and whine about what is going on. That doesn’t take away the pain, but it will work out because God causes all things to work out. You just can’t quit; you can’t give in.”

He also sent prayers to the Donaldson family, because “they are grieving as well.”

“Let us not forget that there were two people in this situation, and that family needs prayer as well,” Williams said. “And we have no ill will toward that family. That family didn’t wake up wanting to hurt my wife. Life is hard — it is very hard — and that was tough. But we hold no ill will toward the Donaldson family.”

Among those at the funeral were coach Doc Rivers, Chris Paul and Austin Rivers of the Los Angeles Clippers; coach Gregg Popovich, Tim Duncan and David West of the San Antonio Spurs; coach Alvin Gentry, Anthony Davis, Ryan Anderson and Eric Gordonof the New Orleans Pelicans; and the entire Thunder organization.

The couple has five children: Lael, Faith, Janna, Elijah and Micah. Williams and his wife met while both attended Notre Dame, where she competed in track and field.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone in the Williams family.
