Mary J Blige: My Life Creatives Share What They Learned About The Superstar

Mary J. Blige burst onto the scene in the early 90s with a hip-hop aesthetic and soul-stirring vocals. With the release of her second album, “My Life,” in 1994, Blige’s status as a trailblazer was cemented in the hearts and minds of fans worldwide.

A 25th-anniversary documentary chronicling that period in Blige’s life is available on Prime Video, providing unparalleled access to the creative and private sides of the superstar. Vanessa Roth directed the documentary “Mary J. Blige’s My Life.” The film looks at Mary, the singer, rapper, songwriter, and actress. With unparalleled behind-the-scenes access, this documentary digs deep to reveal the triumphs and blessings that inspired the record and propelled her to international stardom.

During the African-American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) roundtable discussion, Jill Munroe talked with three of the creatives behind the project, Vanessa Roth, Ashaunna K. Ayars, and Q. Nicole Jackson, about the process of bringing the film to the screen, and what surprising discoveries they learned about Mary through this process.
