Magic Johnson launching cable network, Aspire on Comcast this Summer

Magic Johnson is one of the greatest Lakers NBA players of all time. But what I respect far more than anything Magic’s ever done on the court is how he was able to transform himself post-career. Johnson has announced he is launching an orignal programming cable network on Comcast this summer named Aspire.

The channel will have original shows, movies and documentaries, according to the report. “African-Americans have choices, and now they have another one,” Johnson told the Journal, saying his goal was to create the next BET and open up opportunities for African-American actors, directors and producers.

Johnson is partnering with GMC, owner of the Gospel Music Channel.

I wish more players would take advantage of the knowledge Magic has about transitioning post-career or even in looking for healthy investments while they’re still playing. 20 years after being forced into early retirement Magic has beat the odds on so many levels. Aspire was the perfect choice to name the network.
