LSU offensive tackle La’el Collins won’t be in Chicago for Thursday’s NFL draft, even though he received an invite.
Collins left Chicago on Wednesday following the murder of his pregnant ex-girlfriend. Last week, a woman believed to be Collins’ ex-girlfriend, Brittany Mills. was murdered in her apartment by an unknown assailant. The 29-year-old was pregnant at the time, and shot several times in the stomach after opening the front door. She gave birth at the hospital before passing away from her injuries.
Baton Rouge, LA police are conducting a full scale investigation into Mills’ murder. As part of that investigation, they want to speak with Collins about his relationship with her. He’s not believed to be a suspect.
Collins agent Deryk Gilmore attempted to have the Offensive lineman’s name removed from the draft, and placed into the supplemental draft this summer, but was denied. NFL teams will be hesitant to draft Collins not knowing what exactly his connection is to this murder case.
We’ll see how far down NFL teams feel comfortable drafting a guy under those circumstances.
