On Saturday in Exposition park, Kobe Bryant and Baron Davis participated in the 5th Annual HomeWalk to end homelessness. Started by The United Way, Homewalk is a 5k run and walk that featured approximately 10,000 participants to raise money for the chronically homeless in Los Angeles. The city has over 50,000 homeless men, women and children in Los Angeles County on any given night. Of that number, nearly one-quarter are chronically homeless (without a home for at least a year.)
18% are veterans 40% of those homeless are women and children. 67% are unsheltered, living on the streets or in cars Almost one third (32%) of homeless people in Los Angeles have a bachelors degree or higher One of the leading reasons for homelessness is the loss of a job; unemployment in the Country is in double digits Over half our households spend over 30% of income on rent
Kobe Bryant, who recently launched a foundation to combat youth homelessness, was the honorary chair for the event. Over the past 4 years, Homewalk has raised $1.4 Million dollars and placed 9,000 people into permanent housing.
