Former 2004 Pacers Draft Pick Takes Job At McDonalds After Blowing Millions

Statics say that the average NBA career lasts for just four years, netting the hooper around $24 million. Further more, we know that 60% of NBA players go broke five years after retirement. So, its not out of the realm of possibility that one day you’ll roll out to your favorite fast food establishment, and hear “can I take your order please?” from a former pro.

Meet former Indiana Pacers player David Harrison. The Pacers drafted Harrison in the first round of the 2004 draft. During his four-year NBA career, he earned $5 million.  But Harrison ended up out of the NBA with no job prospects. A chance encounter and declined debit card set the stage for Harrison to take a job at McDonalds to make ends meet.

Harrison was at an Indianapolis-area McDonald’s in August 2013 when his credit card was declined while trying to buy his then 4-year-old son, Dylan, a Happy Meal. The manager recognized him, gave him the meal for free and offered to help him get a job at McDonald’s. Harrison said he took him up on the offer and was hired for the night shift at another McDonald’s.

Harrison ended up being a distraction at the register because of his height and former career, so his time at McDonalds was short lived.

Life comes at you fast.
