The catch 22 of being a professional athlete. You’re paid an incredible amount of money over a short period of time that in theory should be able to sustain you through the bulk of your adult life. Of course you higher professionals to handle those finances. But what happens if you end up in a situation like Indianapolis Colts star Dwight Freeney.
According to a Federal complaint unearthed by TMZ, two Bank of America employees- who also happened to be dating-Eva D. Weinberg and Michael A. Stern were skimming millions out of Freeney’s account.
Freeney finally noticed something odd with the transfers and got the FBI involved. This is why it’s important to always personally review your accounts and transactions every month.
One FBI investigator says some of the items Weinberg and Stern purchased with Freeney’s cash include expensive sunglasses, stays in luxury hotels, and — best of all — they planned to buy a private jet for $1.5 million!
According to the docs, agents even heard Stern brag on the phone … “no one would be able to connect him to the [consulting] account if the wire transfers were investigated.”
Weinberg was arrested in LA. Stern in Miami. Scary stuff. Glad the plot was uncovered.
