ESPN to honor “Good Morning America’s” Robin Roberts with Courage Award at ESPYS

ESPN has announced Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts will be honored with the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the 2013 ESPYS. Each year the award is presented to individuals whose contributions transcend sports. Roberts began her career at ESPN in 1990 where she was one of the first women to anchor SportsCenter. She made the jump to Good Morning America in 1995.

While Roberts is credited for blazing the trail for women in broadcasting, she has also inspired viewers by overcoming not one, but two life-threatening illnesses.

Roberts has overcome two life threatening illnesses over the last six years. Facing breast cancer in 2007, and most recently diagnosed with a rare blood disorder, MDS (myelodysplastic syndrome.)  Roberts took a leave from GMA to receive a bone marrow transplant from her sister.  The 52-year-old returned to the anchor desk on February 20.
