EAST New York’s Amanda Warren & Mike Flynn On Bringing a Police Drama to Air

East New York is the new CBS police drama that stars Amanda Warren, Jimmy Smits, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Kevin Rankin, Richard Kind, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Olivia Luccardi, and Lavel Schley.  Mike Flynn and William Finkelstein created it.

The series follows Deputy Inspector Regina Haywood (Warren) as she takes up a new post in charge of the 74th Precinct — one that is riddled with problems both inside the precint and the neighborhood it’s serves — with a clear-eyed understanding of where the NYPD is falling short and big ideas about how they can do better.

Flynn and Warren spoke with me during the AAFCA Roundtable series about creating a procedural drama post George Floyd and what ingredients make up a Black female character like “Regina Haywood.”
