The new CBS comedy Happy Together stars Damon Wayans, Jr. and Amber Stevens West as a 30-something happily married couple, who want to recapture some of the fun and spontaneity of their youth. Life takes an unexpected turn when a young pop star becomes infatuated with their incredibly pedestrian life and moves in with them.
Jake (Wayans) is an accountant married to his perfect match in Claire (Stevens West) a restaurant and bar designer. The two are the type of couple that binge-watch Netflix together on a Saturday night, and schedule a time to record their outgoing voicemail messages with re-creations of R&B and pop songs. Everything changes when Jake’s client, music superstar Cooper James, portrayed by Felix Mallard, shows up at their front door trying to ditch the paparazzi after a high-profile breakup with his equally famous girlfriend.
The show is loosely inspired by producer Ben Winston’s real life situation with former One Direction star and series producer Harry Styles. Styles lived in Winston’s attic for two years while he waited for his newly purchased mansion to be renovated. The initial stay was only supposed to be two weeks but Styles became a member of the family and didn’t want to leave.
EURweb’s Jill Munroe visited the set of the show and talked with Wayans and Stevens West about their onscreen chemistry, have they ever considered running away from fame and why a show like this is important to lighten the mood in these serious times.
Wayans, Jr. said he enjoys that Jake and Claire are very much in love and comfortable with each other “that’s what people strive for in relationships.” Stevens West added that it was “refreshing to play a couple that actually enjoys each other’s company and has a lot of fun together. They (Jake and Claire) are silly and can be truly themselves, as opposed to the nagging couple or the annoying wife.”
Stevens West has a jam-packed fall. In addition to “Happy Together” premiering September 30th, she’s expecting her first child with her husband – that part won’t be included in the show – and she has a new filming dropping October 26th titled Love Jacked.
