Former New England Patriot TE Aaron Hernandez has been found guilty of first degree murder of his former friend, Odin Lloyd.
After 35 hours of deliberation, the jury in the Aaron Hernandez murder trial reached its verdict. The carries an automatic life sentence in prison with no possibility for parole.
The trial went on for six weeks which included testimony from his fiancée, Shayanna Jenkins, who allegedly disposed of the murder weapon, but was given immunity to testify.
In closing arguments, Hernandez’s attorneys told the jury that the 25-year-old witnessed Lloyd being killed but did not pull the trigger.
The jury found the conviction was warranted by “reason of extreme atrocity or cruelty.” On June 17, 2013, Hernandez lured Lloyd, who was dating the sister of Hernandez’s fiancée, to his home, with the intent to kill him for socializing with the enemy. He was found shot six times in an industrial park less than a mile from Hernandez’s home.
Aaron had a $40 million contract with the Patriots at the time of Lloyd’s murder.
