The Seattle Seahawks decided that as a team they wanted in on making some sort of statement during the National Anthem during the first Sunday of the 2016 NFL season which also happens to fall on the 15th Anniversary of the September 11th attacks.
During one of their preseason games, defensive back Jeremy Lane sat on the bench during the anthem while the rest of the team stood. Lane said he was supporting San Francisco 49’ers QB Colin Kaepernick despite the teams being fierce rivals.
Lane received some backlash for sitting, but had the support of his teammates who decided to take it a step further. After a week of speculation as to what the team might do, wide receiver Doug Baldwin took to twitter with the team’s announcement that has left many feeling underwhelmed.
The Seahawks originally had plans for a stronger show of support for Kaepernick, but a compromise was made when all the team wasn’t 100% on board with the plan.
