Many athletes (not in the playoffs) may be using the offseason to go on vacation but Colin Kaepernick used the first day to give back to the community.
After kneeling during the National Anthem to protest injustice against black people, Kaepernick also declared that he wouldn’t just protest, he would go into action and actually work to help better the community; that’s exactly what he’s been doing.
In addition to the money given out in his Million Dollar Pledge (all which he’s publicly tracking on his website), Kaepernick also spent the first day of the offseason going to shelters and orphanages to donate a variety of materials. He passed along books, clothing, shoes, bedding, and more.
The shoes and clothes came from Kaepernick’s very own closet. He and his girlfriend, Nessa, raided the QB’s closet, packing up shoes, clothing, and hats to donate to a couple places, including the Dorothy Day House in Berkley. He didn’t just donate his worn-out stuff, he gave away Air Max, Jordans, Timberlands, and more.
The Know Your Rights Camp Instagram account has a couple videos from the day.
Sidenote: Just about every sports publication covered Colin Kaepernick kneeling during the national anthem as he protested against racism, oppression, and police brutality against black people, but only a very small few are covering the work in the community that he promised to do. Many athletes have begun speaking out about societal issues, but Kaepernick kept his word and put his money and time where his mouth is.
