49’ers CB Chris Culliver says he can’t have a gay teammate in the locker room

Chris Culliver is a second year cornerback for the San Francisco 49’ers. He was drafted in the third round. He’s from Philadelphia and went to college at South Carolina. You may or may not have been familiar with his name before today. You most certainly hadn’t heard his name in any of the main stories in the days leading up to Sunday’s Super Bowl. But chances are good, you’re about to be quite familiar with him.

During an interview with Artie Lange yesterday during media day, the subject of having a gay teammate came up. Let’s just say that Chris did himself no favors…

“I don’t do the gay guys man,” Culliver said. “I don’t do that. No, we don’t got no gay people on the team, they gotta get up out of here if they do.

“Can’t be with that sweet stuff. Nah … can’t be … in the locker room man. Nah.”

Culliver suggested that homosexual athletes keep their sexuality private until 10 years after they retire.

Of course this comes on the heels of a couple of notable stories in the sports world that involve a gay ex NFL player– who also happened to play with the 49’ers at one point. And the Manti Te’o scandal where Te’o’s sexuality was questioned and the man behind the plot has admitted to being in love with Manti.

According to Culliver’s wikipedia, he was a sports and entertainment management major in college. He must not have participated in any mass media or PR classes…

**UPDATE**

As expected, Culliver has issued an apology.

“The derogatory comments I made yesterday were a reflection of thoughts in my head, but they are not how I feel. It has taken me seeing them in print to realize that they are hurtful and ugly. Those discriminating feelings are truly not in my heart. Further, I apologize to those who I have hurt and offended, and I pledge to learn and grow from this experience,” Culliver said in a statement.
