Monday night, San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich became the 9th coach in NBA History to win 1,000 games. The historic win took place when the Spurs knocked off the Indiana Pacers 95-93.
Among coaches with 1,000 wins, only Phil Jackson (.704) has a better win percentage than Gregg Popovich (.684). The win was also fitting as it took place in his home state of Indiana.
Pop’s reaction to the win:
“I’ve been here a long time and I’ve had good players. That’s the formula. Getting the players is difficult, but I’ve been fortunate to have good ones. The time — that’s the most important element. You have to be around for a while. It’s more a tribute to the players obviously than any coaches.”
In addition to his 1000th win, Pop was named NBA Coach of the Year three times, and has won 5 NBA Championship – all with Tim Duncan on the floor. Basketball’s version of Belichik and Brady.
