“Manchild”- Documentary On LA Basketball Legend Schea Cotton [Video]

Before there was LeBron James, there was LA basketball legend, Schea Cotton. Cotton was featured in Sports Illustrated at the age of 16 after finishing his freshman season at Mater Dei in 1994. In his sophomore season, Mater Dei went 36-1 and won the state championship.

Cotton played his first Division I college basketball game for Alabama in 1999 — two years and three schools later than originally planned — because the NCAA invalidated his SAT score. Cotton, who has attention deficit disorder, was administered a test containing some boldface type and allowed extra time.

Cotton never got the chance to play at UCLA or North Carolina State, the two schools he was scheduled to enroll in during the 1997 and 1998 seasons. His family sued the NCAA in September 1998. The case was settled and sealed.

In 2000 after just one year of college, Cotton declared for the NBA draft but wasn’t selected. Manchild is the documentary that tells the story of this high school phenom who was expected to be a superstar in the NBA. Paul Pierce, Baron Davis, Ron Artest, Tyson Chandler, Jason Hart, and Elton Brand are just some of the NBA stars whose commentary is featured.
