JR Smith says he wants to retire a Knick

JR Smith had one of his best seasons as an NBA player with the Knicks this season. Under the guidance of head coach Mike Woodson, Jr found the stability and rhythm he had been lacking most of his career. JR won the “Sixth-Man-Of-The-Year, but the Knicks feel short to the Indiana Pacers. JR can opt out of his contract this summer which is set to pay him $2.8 million. Following Saturday night’s loss, JR was asked about his future. He says he wants to retire a Knick.

“I want to retire a Knick. I don’t want to go anywhere else,” Smith said. “I love my teammates, I love my coaches. I was standing in the locker room looking at my jersey after the game and just knowing that I don’t want to be anywhere else except in the orange and blue. We’ll see.”

The Knicks will be over the cap this summer with $76.4 million in committed salary. During the playoffs, Smith was averaging 16 points on 43 percent shooting before he was suspend after throwing an elbow at Celtics Jason Terry. After he returned, those numbers dropped to 13 points and 29 percent shooting in games following the suspension.
