Looks like the NBA might not be too happy about the Toronto Raptors bringing Drake on board as their global brand ambassador. The Raps announced last fall that Drizzy would be assisting with some promotional efforts for the team leading up to the city’s 2016 NBA All-Star weekend.
Earlier this week it was announced the NBA was fining the Raps $25K for Drake shouting out OKC Thunder MVP Kevin Durant, who attended the rapper’s concert during OVO Fest a few weeks ago.
But, “The Globe and Mail” is reporting the real reason for the fine is that the NBA wants the Raps to end their association with Drake.
This has risen beyond the level of a spat. It’s an executive knife fight. Raptors officials would not comment on the Drake versus NBA situation. They are plainly loath to make their secret war public.
They also refused to address a key detail – that the NBA offered to drop the tampering fine if the team agreed to strip Drake of his title. The Raptors apparently refused.
Hip-Hop is too powerful? Or did Thunder owner Clay Bennett get a chill thinking that the Raptors might actually be able to lure KD from the Thunder. Seems as if he should be more worried about Durant’s hometown Wizards.
