Memphis Grizzlies guard OJ Mayo has had a rough January. First the fight on the team plane with teammate Tony Allen and now a 10 game suspension without pay for violating the league’s anti-drug policy.
OJ tested positive for dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). This is the same over the counter supplement that Rashard Lewis was suspended for at the top of this season.
Mayo’s suspension will start Friday when the Grizzlies visit the Sixers, and he will be eligible to return Feb. 15 also against the Sixers in Memphis. The loss in salary is just over $400,000.
In a statement, OJ accepted responsibility for the mistake and apologized to his team and Grizzlies fans:
The question remains will OJ even be with the team once he’s completed his suspension. OJ hasn’t exactly been lighting it up this season and seems to have fallen out of favor with the coaching staff (and of course Tony Allen).
