Sheryl Swoopes was known as the female Michael Jordan in the 90’s. Watching last night’s NCAA women’s championship game, a highlight segment was shown of her in the championship game in 1993 where she scored 47 points. That’s still a record AND it covers both men and women.
She has 3 Olympic Gold medals, was the first player signed to the WNBA in 1997 (The Houston Comets), the first three-time WNBA MVP (2000, 2002, 2005) and the first three-time WNBA Defensive Player of the Year (2000, 2002, 2003). Swoopes is also a four-time WNBA champion (1997–2000).
In addition to ALL OF THAT, she also was the first female to receive her own shoe. Nike launched the Air Swoop with the classic WNBA lil rascals commercials featuring a precocious Kyla Pratt!
I’m in L.A. girl (as you know) so I always cheered for Lisa Leslie but Sheryl Swoopes is in my top 5 ALL DAY! And she has the sickest birth name for a professional basketball player, “Swoopes”.
Those spots were my absolute fav.
“Wheres your mama?”
“Mama cant help your jumpshot,”
Oh and for the record, she’s back in the WNBA, she signed with the Tulsa Shock. Hey Jordan did it!
